Fraunhofer IWKS, one of the 80 independent institutes of Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Germany’s largest non-university research organisation, develops circular materials and materials science technologies for a sustainable, waste-free circular economy. We do research on more sustainable alternatives for critical raw materials and elaborate solutions for an intelligent regeneration of innovative materials and their energy-efficient recovery.
Main tasks and responsibilities in the project:
- Task 3.2: using water jet cutting to open battery pack housings
- Task 3.5: using impact crusher and other technologies to release cells from modules
- Task 4.3: Battery cell recycling with electrohydraulic fragmentation to recover metal, plastic and black mass fractions
